C.I.A.J. World Youth Alliance, Inc. Breaks ground for a Modular Community Learning Center and Technology Tune-up Clinic™

ATLANTA – C.I.A.J. World Youth Alliance, Inc. is well into its 10th year as a non-profit youth services organization established to empower youth for local citizenship and global leadership through training, education, travel, and community service. WYA, Inc. announces an historic groundbreaking ceremony for the development of our Modular Community Learning Center and Technology Tune-up Clinic™ to take place at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at 581 Simpson Street, SW, Atlanta.

This groundbreaking event supports one of our core projects, the Visions In Practice (V.I.P.) Program. The V.I.P. Program is a multi-disciplinary, enrichment after-school program, which focuses on career exploration, cultural awareness, and global exposure. Our V.I.P. Program takes place in the northwest quadrant of metro-Atlanta, and is a viable part of the Atlanta Empowerment Zone initiative. Notable success of the V.I.P. Program has prompted the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, a division of the National Association of Government Employees, AFL-CIO to make a parcel of land available in the English Avenue area.

Community leaders, educators, and parents applaud the Visions in Practice Program for its measurable reductions in teen pregnancy, high school dropout rates, drug and gang related activity, and notable behavioral modification among middle school youth in grades 5-8. The development of the Modular Community Learning Center and Technology Tune-up Clinic™ will provide increased accessibility to a greater number of our inner city youth, who desperately need this alternative take them off the streets approach.

Research has shown that youngsters who are exposed to positive role models and mentors have a better grasp on what it takes to succeed. This bodes well for the choice WYA, Inc. made nearly eight years ago to work with the youth in the Vine City and English Avenue areas. Both communities are rich with historical character and have deep roots dating back as early as 1871.

In the early 1900s, sections of the English Avenue and Vine City neighborhoods were known as a mecca for a host of prominent African-Americans whose legacies have carved an indelible niche in global history. In 2001, our Visions In Practice (V.I.P.) Program participants are proud to walk the same streets, play on the same playgrounds, attend the same schools, and yes, even drink from the same water fountains as these life-long Vine City residents have done heretofore.

Rev. Ralph David Abernathy - Civil Rights Activist/Pastor, West Hunter Baptist Church
Marvin Arrington - Former President, Atlanta City Council
Julian Bond - First African-American State Senator - State of Georgia
Maynard Jackson – Former Mayor and Chairman of Jackson Securities Investment Bankers
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Family -- Coretta Scott King
Gladys Knight – World-renowned Rhythm and Blues Singer

Today, these voices echo the call to strive for excellence in the realization that everyone has the ability to actualize their dreams and aspirations.

WYA, Inc. is known for "visioneering" programs that have proven to be positive and effective agents of change in young people. We are very proud to develop the Modular Community Learning Center and Technology Tune-up Clinic™ as the next phase in this on-going process. On August 1st at noon, we will bring the past and present accomplishments together and we invite you to join us in this historic groundbreaking at 581 Simpson Street, SW, Atlanta.
